In October 2015 we took our KTM 1190R to the Spinreel Sand Dunes in Oregon. Although it's not exactly the weapon of choice for deep sand it did surprisingly well despite the fact that it's 500lb+ and had a way too small 8 paddle tire.

Swapping a KTM 1290 Super Duke starter (SM-13) into a KTM 1190R. The 2013-2014 1190 starters (SM-17) are known to be weak and have a high failure rate. The 2015 1190 bikes now come with the SM-13 starter. The swap isn't really technically challenging but will take you few hours to complete.
