Camel ADV 790ADV Neck Brace

The KTM 790 ADV has been a solid performer since it's launch in early 2019. There's tons of cool new tech on the bike that hasn't been seen on an ADV bike from the Austrian brand before. Unfortunately, the designers decided to stick with the weak, problematic headlight/gauge cluster mounting set-up that was used on the 1090/1190/1290 line. Everything ahead of the steering stem hangs off of four tiny metal posts that are welded to the bike's head tube. It appears that the lower support bars the designers added to the 790 have done little to beef up the mounting points. The 790's headlight set-up is quite heavy. Add to that the gauge cluster, windscreen, lower wind deflectors, signal lights...

KTM 790R vs Yamaha 700 Tenere

I'm lucky enough to have both the KTM 790R and Yamaha 700 Tenere. I can ride them back to back and compare them long-term. I can't do a well-rounded comparison. I don't do nearly as much "ADV" riding as I'd like to. It's been almost 2 years since I loaded up with camping gear and was out on a backcountry overnighter or even rode on the highway for more than an hour. I'll tell you what I can though. They're different tools for different jobs. Riders need to be honest about what their needs really are. Everyone wants to ride like Chris Birch but how many people will be able to regardless of what bike they are on? 1%? 0.5%? Less?Hard...

T7 Crash in the Whoops

I was in the Imperial Sand Dune in Southern California testing some prototype suspension parts. I was running a section of whoops while fine-tuning the settings. I was feeling confident and got a bit carried away. I went in too fast, got crossed up after taking a bad bounce. When the bike hit the next whoop, it was almost parallel to it rather than perpendicular. I was catapulted off the bike and landed about 20' from it. The landing knocked the wind out of me. I'm glad I had my neck and knee braces on as well as a full pressure suit. The bike flipped over, hit very hard too with the right side of the bar hitting first. The...

Yamaha T7 offroad @ Imperial Sand Dunes

We spent a few hours on our Yamaha T7 at the Imperial Sand Dunes in southeast California. Despite having a worn-out a knobby tire instead of a paddle, the bike performed well. It handles sand better than any other ADV bike I've ridden.

790 Shock Heat Shield

The KTM 790 ADV a great bike but it's not without a few issues. Keep the heat out of your 790 shock with our heat-shield. A cooler shock improves your suspension performance and extends service intervals. In order to meet Euro 5 emissions, KTM mounted a large catalytic converter on the 790. We're all for lower exhaust emissions but the CAT is located directly under the rear shock. The CAT can be several hundred degrees under normal bike operation and heat from the CAT increases the shock temperature. When the shock oil is overheated it goes through thermal breakdown. This process changes oil's viscosity which can lead to increased wear on moving parts and poor suspension performance referred to as...
